Bicknell lies along State Route 24 in Rabbit Valley, roughly midway between Loa and Torrey, with the Fremont River below town and Thousand Lake Mountain and Boulder Mountain filling the horizon north and south. The Capitol Reef National Park visitor center is 17 miles east. At 7,123 feet, Bicknell shares Loa's high, dry climate: cold winters, mild summers and dark skies.
The town began as Thurber in 1879, moved to its present site in 1897 because of sandy soil and poor water, and picked up its current name in 1914 when Thomas W. Bicknell, a Rhode Island educator, offered a library to any Utah town that would take his name. Two towns competed; Thurber became Bicknell, Grayson became Blanding, and each got 500 books. The 2020 Census counted 323 residents.
Bicknell is the county's school town and its quirky cultural center. Residents are farm and ranch families, teachers and school staff, hospitality workers tied to Torrey and Capitol Reef, and a growing group of artists, retirees and second-home owners who want Capitol Reef country at a lower price than Torrey.
Wayne Middle School and Wayne High School are both in Bicknell, so families here have the shortest school run in the county. The 1947 Bicknell Theater, built from Boulder Mountain pine logs and originally called the Wayne Theatre, still shows movies and hosts the Bicknell International Film Festival, a celebration of gloriously bad B-movies held every July around Pioneer Day since 1996. Loa, ten minutes west, has the grocery store, clinic and county offices; Torrey, ten minutes east, has restaurants and lodging.
Outdoors, Bicknell Bottoms just southeast of town is a wetland wildlife area and fish hatchery popular with birders. Sunglow Campground in the red cliffs east of town is a local favorite. Boulder Mountain's lakes, Fish Lake and Capitol Reef are all within 20 to 40 minutes, and Thousand Lake Mountain rises straight behind town. The Fremont River runs through the valley for fishing and floating.
Richfield is about 1 hour 5 minutes northwest via SR-24 and I-70 for Sevier Valley Medical Center, Snow College and shopping. Salt Lake City is roughly 3 hours 20 minutes.
Bicknell's housing runs from early-1900s pioneer homes and mid-century ranch houses on the town grid to newer custom homes and cabins on view lots along the benches south of SR-24. Lots are typically large with irrigation, and small acreages with pasture and river frontage come up along the Fremont. Because Torrey has become expensive, Bicknell has picked up buyers looking for the same landscape with a working-town feel.
As of August 2026, Redfin reported a median sale price of about $455,000 for Bicknell over the prior three months. As everywhere in Wayne County, a very small number of sales sets that figure, and prices range widely from modest in-town homes to view acreage well above the median. Wayne County as a whole showed a Redfin median around $774,000 for the same period, driven by high-end Torrey-area sales.
Buyers are local families, teachers, retirees, and second-home and remote-work buyers priced out of Torrey. Most homes here are typically eligible for USDA rural development financing, which can mean zero down for qualified buyers; we can check a specific address with you. If you are selling, the Capitol Reef connection is your marketing angle; buyers from outside the county are searching for Torrey and finding Bicknell.
The park visitor center is 17 miles east on SR-24, about 20 minutes. Torrey, the park's gateway town, is about ten minutes.
