Nephi is the county seat of Juab County and the biggest town between Santaquin and Fillmore on Interstate 15. It sits in the Juab Valley with the Wasatch Range and Mount Nebo rising to the east and the lower West Hills across the valley, roughly 85 miles south of Salt Lake City and about 45 minutes from Provo. Three I-15 interchanges (Exits 222, 225 and 228) serve the city, and Main Street is State Route 28, which continues south through Levan to Gunnison. State Route 132 crosses town and climbs Salt Creek Canyon toward Fountain Green and Moroni.
The town was settled in 1851 along Salt Creek and took the name Nephi in 1882. It grew as a farm, livestock and rail town and still feels like one, with a working Main Street, grain elevators and a grid of wide streets laid out the pioneer way. The 2020 Census counted 6,443 residents, up steadily over the last two decades as Utah County commuters have discovered that Nephi is close enough for a daily drive north.
Today we see a real mix: multi-generation Juab families, ranchers and farmers, people who work at the hospital, schools and county offices, truck drivers and tradespeople who like the interstate access, and a growing share of households who commute to Payson, Spanish Fork and Provo.
Nephi is the service center for the county. Central Valley Medical Center is a critical access hospital right in town, and there is a full grocery store, hardware, auto services, pharmacies, and a strip of restaurants and truck stops along the freeway. Juab School District is headquartered here, with Juab High School (the Wasps), Juab Junior High and elementary schools all inside city limits. For anything Nephi does not have, Provo and Orem are under an hour north.
The second week of July belongs to the Ute Stampede, a PRCA rodeo that has run since 1934 and fills the Juab County Fairgrounds with a parade, carnival and rodeo nights. The Nebo Loop Scenic Byway begins on the east side of town and climbs to roughly 9,000 feet through aspen and pine on its way to Payson; it is one of the best fall-color drives in Utah. Salt Creek Canyon offers close-in hiking and camping, and Yuba State Park and its reservoir are about 25 minutes south for boating and fishing. Nephi also has a municipal airport, a city pool, parks and a golf course at Canyon Hills.
Commute-wise, I-15 makes the difference. Provo is about 45 minutes, Salt Lake City about 1 hour 20 minutes, and Richfield, the Sevier Valley hub with Snow College's Richfield campus and Sevier Valley Medical Center, is roughly 1 hour 20 minutes south by I-15 and US-50 or down SR-28 through Gunnison and Salina.
Nephi has the most varied housing stock in Juab County. The original townsite has brick pioneer-era and early 1900s homes on large lots with mature trees, many of them on quarter- to half-acre parcels with room for a shop or animals. Mid-century ramblers and 1970s-90s split-levels fill in the middle, and newer subdivisions on the north and east sides have added modern single-family homes and some townhomes as Utah County demand has spilled south. The 2020 Census counted about 2,135 housing units in the city. Outside the grid you will find horse property and small acreages along the valley floor.
Buyers tend to be young families priced out of Utah County, local families moving up, and retirees who want hospital access and freeway convenience without big-city prices. As of August 2026, Redfin reported a median sale price of about $445,000 for Nephi over the prior three months, roughly flat year over year. That is still well below the Utah statewide median, which is a big part of the appeal for commuters.
