Aurora is a small city of just under 1,000 people in north Sevier County, about four miles southwest of Salina along State Route 260 and roughly 17 miles north of Richfield. It sits at about 5,200 feet on the flat, irrigated floor of the Sevier Valley, with the Sevier River to the east and the Rocky Ford Canal running through the farm ground that surrounds town.
Four families from Provo founded the settlement in 1875 on a bend of the river and called it Willowbend; the townsite was later moved a couple of miles west to escape spring flooding and the name changed to Aurora. Many current residents can trace their roots to those founding families, and that continuity shapes the town. Aurora is one square mile of tidy streets, big yards, corrals and hay fields, and it has stayed that way on purpose.
Most residents commute to work in Salina, Richfield or Gunnison, or at the SUFCO mine, while others farm and ranch full time. The 2020 Census median age of 40.5 is the highest among the valley towns, reflecting a stable mix of established families and retirees who chose to stay.
Aurora is about as low-key as central Utah gets. The town has a city park and ball fields, and the real recreation is a short drive away: Paiute ATV Trail access from Salina, fishing on the Sevier River, and hunting and camping on the Wasatch Plateau up Salina Canyon and around Gooseberry. Fish Lake is about an hour southeast. The Eyes to the Sky Balloon Festival in Salina and the county fair in Richfield are the big summer events.
Aurora children attend Sevier School District schools in Salina: Salina Elementary, North Sevier Middle School and North Sevier High School, about a ten-minute bus ride. Sevier Valley Medical Center in Richfield is roughly 25 minutes south, and Gunnison Valley Hospital is a similar drive north.
Highway access is a strong point. I-70 and U.S. 89 are a few minutes away at Salina, so Richfield is about 20 to 25 minutes, Gunnison about 20 minutes, and Salt Lake City roughly two and a half hours. Aurora offers the quiet of a farm town without being remote.
Housing in Aurora is almost entirely single-family homes on large lots, often a half acre or more, with room for a shop, animals and a garden. The stock ranges from early-1900s brick homes to 1970s and 1980s ranch houses and a handful of newer builds, plus farm properties with pasture and water shares on the edges of town. The 2020 Census counted just 370 housing units with a homeowner vacancy rate of 0.3 percent, so turnover is very low.
Buyers who choose Aurora are usually looking for space: families who want animals and a shop, retirees who want quiet, and workers at the mine or in Salina who prefer a smaller town.
