Manti sits on the east side of the Sanpete Valley along US-89, about 7 miles south of Ephraim and roughly 50 minutes north of Richfield. It is the Sanpete County seat, and the thing everyone notices first is the Manti Utah Temple, finished in 1888 from cream-colored oolitic limestone quarried on the hill it stands on. The temple was renovated and rededicated in 2024, and it still anchors the north end of town.
Manti was settled in 1849, the first Latter-day Saint community established outside the Wasatch Front, and it became the launching point for most of the other towns in Sanpete and Sevier counties. The population was 3,429 at the 2020 Census. Today it is a working county town: the courthouse, county offices, the Sanpete County Fairpark, and South Sanpete School District services are all here.
The people who live in Manti are a mix of multi-generation farm and ranch families, county and school district employees, folks who commute up to Snow College in Ephraim, and a steady stream of retirees and second-home buyers who wanted a small town with a real Main Street and mountain access out the back door.
Recreation is the easy sell. Manti Canyon climbs east of town into the Manti-La Sal National Forest, with Yearns Reservoir and the Skyline Drive high country above it for fishing, camping, ATV riding and hunting. Palisade State Park, about 6 miles south near Sterling, has a swimming and paddle lake, campground, and an 18-hole golf course. Winter brings snowmobiling on Skyline Drive.
Kids attend Manti Elementary and Manti High School in the South Sanpete School District, and Snow College is a 10-minute drive. Manti has its own hospital-adjacent clinic services, but the closest full hospitals are Gunnison Valley Hospital (about 20 minutes) and Sevier Valley Medical Center in Richfield. The Sanpete County Fair in August, held at the fairpark on the north side of town, is the biggest week of the year, with a rodeo, demolition derby, parade and 4-H shows.
Commute-wise, Manti is a country town, not a suburb. Provo is about an hour and 40 minutes via US-89 and US-6; Salt Lake City is closer to two and a half hours. I-70 at Salina is about 35 minutes south, and I-15 at Nephi about 55 minutes northwest.
Manti's housing stock has range. The original 19th-century plat has brick and stone pioneer-era homes on large city lots, often 0.25 to 0.5 acre with irrigation water. Mid-century ramblers fill in the blocks between, and newer subdivisions on the north and west edges have brought 2000s and 2020s construction, including some townhome and small-lot product near 860 N Allred Lane. Outside city limits along the benches and the San Pitch River bottoms, there are horse properties and small farms on 2 to 40 acres.
